Cooper, Dr. Carolyn
Dr. Carolyn Cooper is a recently retired professor of literary and cultural studies who taught at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica for thirty-six years. She is the author of two influential books – Sound Clash: Jamaican Dancehall Culture at Large and Noises in the Blood: Orality, Gender and the ‘Vulgar’ Body of Jamaican Popular Culture. She is the editor of the award-winning book Global Reggae.
A well-known media personality in Jamaica, Professor Cooper writes a weekly column for the Sunday Gleaner that she usually posts on her bilingual blog, “Jamaica Woman Tongue.” She has appeared in several documentaries on Caribbean culture produced by a wide range of local and international media houses such as Television Jamaica, Al Jazeera TV, National Public Radio (USA), the BBC, ARD TV (Germany), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and B. World Connection (Guadeloupe). Most recently, she was the presenter of the BBC World Service radio programme, “Jamaica: The Music of Time.” Professor Carolyn Cooper is a public intellectual committed to widening debates on cultural politics beyond the walls of the university.
